The acidity or alkalinity(base) of a solution is expressed by it's pH value. A neutral solution such as water has a pH value of 7.0. Decreasing pH values from 7.0 to 0.0 indicate increasing acidity. Increasing pH values from 7.0 to 14.0 indicate increasing alkalinity. (see image below) Since the pH value denotes acidity or alkalinity of a liquid, it gives some indication of the materials required in construction of a vessel, pump or tubing for the liquid. However many other factors must also be considered, pH is merely an approximate guide from which to begin researching.
